Where Hikvision Stands in Canada Today

This is the question most people arrive on this page with, so we answer it first and without spin. On 27 June 2025 the federal government, under the national security provisions of the Investment Canada Act, ordered Hikvision Canada Inc. to cease its activities and wind up its Canadian business. At the same time, federal departments, agencies, and Crown corporations were prohibited from purchasing or using Hikvision equipment, and a review began to identify and remove existing federal installations. The government also encouraged Canadians and Canadian organisations to take the national security determination into account in their own purchasing decisions.

What that order does not do is make Hikvision equipment illegal for private owners. A homeowner in Scarborough with a Hikvision system is not breaking any law, an independent retailer running eight Hikvision cameras is not required to remove them, and existing hardware and software continue to function normally. The order targets the Canadian corporate entity and federal procurement, not private property.
